Volcanic eruption and fallout in the year 2000 resulted in an evacuation of the entire island. Approximately 2,700 people have returned to the island since 2005 in an effort to rebuild their lives there. 6,050 trees were planted on the island by 580 volunteers as a part of forest regeneration efforts.
